CONFERENCE 2014 - SPECIAL AWARDS

Friday, 6 June 2014

The Kiteroa Trophy for the person or persons who contributed the most effort in promoting the progress within the Ayrshire breed in the last 12 months both club wise and breed wise was presented to Jonathan Glentworth.

For the past ten years, Jonathan (24) has continued to pursue his goals within the Ayrshire world, whilst promoting the breed at every opportunity.  As an AI technician for LIC, Jonathan covered up to 138 cows in one day, and gained the highest conception rate in his District Manager’s group. He made a point of recommending Ayrshire semen to as many clients as possible on his round, and provided facts to back up his endorsement of the breed. Jonathan has been working for his parents since leaving school eight years ago and provides a valuable input into managing the high producing ‘Sanrosa’ herd.  Jonathan judged the North Island championships in the Bay of Islands in November last year, and has become a respected judge in the Ayrshire ring as well as all-breeds. His extensive experience, locally and overseas, has enabled him to speak knowledgably and confidently about his decisions and placings, and his friendly manner ensures he gets along with everyone.  Exhibiting cattle is important to Jonathan and he has enjoyed relative success in the past few years, but this year his commitment to his AI run prevented him from showing. He has also proved competent in young handler classes, where his easy manner complements his natural rapport with the cattle.  Jonathan is Vice-Chairman of the Taranaki Club and is an active member at all club activities. Recently he participated in the Ayrshire Youth Seminar, which Taranaki hosted.  In recent months Jonathan has taken on more and more responsibility at the Ayrshire bull farm, including often having to round up unruly bulls, and is always available to help out there.  With Gordon’s leg in plaster earlier this year, Jonathan’s help proved invaluable and for a time he took sole responsibility for activities there.

The Bell Booth Achiever Award for persons who have made some notable achievement in the Ayrshire breed was presented to Roger & Jane Hutchings.

Roger & Jane Hutchings of Lodore Ayrshires, Okaihau, have been strong achievers within the Ayrshire community for a number of years.  Recently they have also gained national recognition as Supreme winners of the Ballance Farm Environment Awards for Northland, also winning the Ballance Agri-Nutrients Soil Management Award , the LIC Dairy Farm Award and Meridian Energy Excellence Award.  Roger and Jane milk 390 pedigree Ayrshires on the farm originally purchased by Roger’s parents Malcolm & Marilyn, that has since been expanded to it’s current 349 ha.  With a long family association with the Ayrshire breed, Roger is a Senior Judge, a TOP Inspector and has served for a number of years on the Board of Semayr Breeding Services.  The Lodore herd regularly tops breed production awards for the Northland area, having won every year except one since the 2006/07 season.  In 1994 Roger and Jane won the Kiteroa Trophy for the persons contributing the most to the breed.  Lodore Ayrshires has had a number of young bulls accepted into the Semayr Progeny Test Team, with 15 young bulls currently awaiting proofs and a further three in the 2014 team.  Bulls that have gone on to be marketed as proven bulls with LIC Alpha Nominated include Lodore Snapshot BW 93, newly proven in 2014. Other proven bulls for the breed have included Lodore Blake (Semayr/LIC) and Lodore TK Brace (CRV Ambreed).  A staple for the Hutchings for many years has been the Lodore Invitation In-Calf Heifer Sale.  Held annually in mid-April, the 2014 sale saw 24 head average $3495 with a top price of $7,100.  One of the heifers sold through this sale, Lodore Phils Snowie, VHC, went  on to sell for the breed record price of $19,500 as a  four year old at the dispersal sale Colleen Vincent and Bill King of Karnea Ayrshires, Matamata in 2010.   Also active in the show ring at the local Northland shows for many years, the Hutchings family has enjoyed many successes.  Lodore Gards Rose was named Ayrshire North Island Champion in 2008/09 at the Northern Wairoa Show.

A Distinguished Member Award for members who portray Ayrshires either nationally or locally by always portraying a positive attitude for the breed, the NZ Ayrshire Assn and it's aims, directions and objectives was presented to Peter McFall.

Peter became a member of the Thames V alley Club in July 1987, and for the first ten years kept a fairly low profile in the Club.  During that time he and his family travelled the local show circuit bringing out some good stock, the most successful being the cows Greenlane NI Lisa and Greenlane Malvina. In 1997 he became Senior Vice President of the Club and kindly offered his property for our annual Club show.  This was always a successful day with Anne at the helm making cups of tea and coffee and keeping food warm for us etc.  In July 1999 he became President of the Club and in 2000 arranged a reunion in the Springdale Hall for the past & present members which was a great success.  Many photos were brought out and lots of reminiscing done.  He then became a very able Treasurer of the Club for the next three years and in 2005 agreed to be our Auditor but as well took on the job as Board Director for Ward 2.  He carried out this responsibility very well representing the area for nine years.  During this time he served on the Executive, Semayr, Production Promotion, TOP / Classification & Judging and Ace Committees at various times, and as a TOP inspector.  All the while he has been representing us, he has been running his farm and overseeing three other farms in the Tahuna area for Tahuna Pastoral Co.  Peter has now retired his position as an Ayrshire New Zealand director.  Thanks Pete, we have appreciated all you have done for our Club over the past 17 years.
