Just like last year 2021 has proved to be difficult as we all work our way through COVID and the impact that it has had on each one of us, one way or another. The freedom to come and go and to do what we have been used to do is something that we have all found difficult to handle.

Our members are important to our Ayrshire breed, and it is at this time of the year that we think of those families who have lost a family member, and to those who are unwell and unable to be together over Christmas.

As most of our members are farming it is important that you and your family keep well and have a plan to counter how COVID could affect your farming business.

Enough doom let us be grateful that we don’t live in parts of the world that are struggling with this virus.

Merry Christmas.

Ayrshire Young Breeders Seminar

The 2022 Ayrshire Young Breeders Seminar will be held from 9-11 April in the Nelson/Collingwood area, with accommodation in Collingwood.  More information will follow in the new year, but lock those dates in now!

Ayrshire On Farm Challenge

As members were advised last month the decision has been made to move the judging in the Ayrshire National On Farm Challenge to mid-January 2022.  Regional results will be announced in February / March 2022, and national results will be announced at the 2022 Annual Conference.  As soon as the judging schedule is complete it will be e-mailed to all participating members.

Covid-19 Policy

Jersey NZ have recently reviewed their Covid-19 policy following the implementation of the new Covid-19 Protection Framework.  Jersey NZ takes the safety of both their team and members very seriously.  As a result only members/visitors may visit the office where they have a current vaccination passport or have had a negative test within 72 hours of their visit.  While this is voluntary, any visitor who is not prepared to meet these requirements will be treated as if they are unvaccinated and virtual alternatives will be made.  The full Jersey NZ Covid-19 Policy is available on request from the office.

Judging Schools

Jersey NZ and Ayrshire New Zealand will be holding joint Judging Schools in Northland and Manawatu in the last week of February 2022. More information will be provided once dates and farm locations are confirmed in the new year.

Rosemoor Spark

It has recently been discovered that the sire of 513646 Rosemoor Spark ET is incorrect.  Spark was recently genomically tested, and as part of that process he underwent automatic parentage verification.  His previous sire 61075 Ingledale Bonny King (born 1969) had been G3 profiled earlier this year, and he failed to that profile.  He has passed to dam.  It would appear that an incorrect straw was used as part of the ET programme and Spark’s correct sire is now confirmed as 504588 Rosevale GS Zacky (s. Goldstream Sebastian). Spark’s indexes may be affected in the next Animal Evaluation run.  As Zacky is a registered Ayrshire bull, there will be no change to the registration status of any of Spark’s progeny.

Bulletin Advertising

The last few issues of the Ayrshire Bulletin are grabbing attention in the industry. In each issue of the Bulletin members choose to place an advertisement for their stud and if it weren’t for these ads, the magazine wouldn’t be possible.
We encourage new members and well known studs to continue their support by placing an ad in this upcoming Autumn issue.

The deadline to book an ad is 18 February 2022.
All copy then needs to be in the following week, by 25 February 2022.

Contact the office to book your ad now

A big thank you to the studs who place regular advertisements!

2022 what is in the pipeline

Three Generation Pedigrees

As part of the recent AE updates, NZAEL has started using new genetic evaluation software that is independent to LIC. They will produce BWs and BVs, however work on producing PWs and PVs is still underway.  We were unaware of this issue until after the December 3.0 AE run and have been advised that NZAEL are aiming to generate PWs and PVs by February 2022.

As a result, where members choose to run the standard NZAEL version of the Three Generation Pedigree (which exclude genomics), the BWs and BVs will display as expected, but the PWs and PVs will default to 0.   LIC pedigrees that also include genomic data will include all indexes.  When requesting pedigrees over the next few weeks, please clarify your requirements with our team.
