the Arran Trophy for the Ayrshire Young Judge Competition will be held this season at the NZ Dairy Event at Feilding on Tuesday 25 January 2022.

The winner and second placegetter will be invited to represent Ayrshire New Zealand at the World Wide Sires All Breeds Young Judge competition which will take place later on the same day.

The winner of this prestigious breed competition will receive $1,000 towards attendance to a major Australian Show of their choice.

  • Open to people 30 years of age or under, as at the 1st October each year, who are a member, or son/daughter or employee of a member of the NZ Ayrshire Association.
  • Up to six finalists will come together at the NZ Royal Show where the final will be judged.  In the event of more than six contestants preliminaries may be held at the discretion of the organising committee.
  • Any competitor who has previously won the World Wide Sires All Breeds Young Judge Competition is not eligible to enter.
  • Prize – A trip to a major Australian Show of the winner’s choice to the value of $1,000.00 sponsored by the NZ Ayrshire Association.
    Upon application an appropriate alternative may be approved at the discretion of the Board.    The prize is to be claimed within 18 months of the competition.
  • The Competition Organising Committee is Messrs B A Hutchings (Convenor), G Glentworth, A Thomson, K Eade and S Donald
  • The format for judging Preliminaries and Finals is to be set by the Board/ Organising Committee



  • Competitors will judge a class of five cows.
  • Competitors are to have 10 minutes to complete judging (or if judged singly 7 minutes).
  • Master Judges – Two Senior Judges will be appointed.  Points: Placing 35, Reasons 30, Speed 10, Ringcraft, Manner and Personal Appearance 10, Verbal Presentation 15.
  • If less than three candidates enter, the competition for the year will be cancelled.



  • Two competitors per breed.
  • The Board / Organising Committee has the right to nominate these competitors.  In normal circumstances the first two placegetters of the Ayrshire National Young Judge Competition each year would go forward to the All Breeds Young Judges competition.
